How does Botulinum Toxin work?

Botulinum Toxin A is a well-known injectable that is used to temporarily relax certain muscles of the face to restore youthfulness. Through a relatively painless procedure, Botulinum Toxin A is injected underneath the skin in order to minimize and smooth out lines and wrinkles.

Botulinum Toxin A has the ability to make a remarkable difference to wrinkles and brow position – leaving you with a fresher and more youthful appearance.
Botulinum Toxin A has gained popularity over the years as a less expensive, less invasive (requiring no downtime and virtually pain-free) and semi-permanent solution to anti-ageing as opposed to your more traditional surgical procedures.

Botulinum Toxin A is also very effective for excessive sweating under the arms, sweaty hands and feet and is much safer than traditional surgical methods used to reduce hyperhidrosis.

Is there anyone who can not have Botox?

Yes. There are certain individuals who can be allergic to Botulinum Toxin and therefore can not be administered with the product. There are also certain medical conditions resulting from muscular disorders that render individuals unsuitable for Botulinum Toxin injection. These include but are not limited to Myasthenia Gravis, Esophageal and swallowing disorders, cancers, acute infections (influenza, lung infections, etc.), voice disorders, voice hoarseness, eye movement disorders, and double vision.

Is Botox permanent?

No. Botulinum Toxin is a semi-permanent,  less expensive and less invasive and solution to anti-aging. How long the products last and gives an effect varies from patient to patient and depends on many factors including level of physical activity, smoking, stress, etc.

What is the difference between Botulinum Toxin and fillers?

Muscles beneath the skin contract and result in the formation of wrinkles etc. Botulinum Toxin works to essentially paralyse these muscles, resulting in decreased contraction.

Dermal fillers are composed of Hyaluronic acid. This is naturally found in our skin and is a natural moisturizing agent which contributes to skin hydration. It is also able to hold up to 1000 times its weight in water.

In fillers, Hyaluronic acid is engineered according to the depth of the area being injected as well as the result desired. Therefore, fillers can be used to enhance certain facial features (lips, cheeks, chin, forehead) and restore areas of lost volume to create a lifting effect.

What are the side effects of fillers?

Immediate side effects can include; redness, swelling, itching, and pain at the site of the injection. This subsides soon after.

Other side effects also include bruising which can occur occasionally and can take a slightly longer time to subside. For this reason, alcohol and any blood-thinning medications need to be avoided for a period of time prior to treatment and any blood clotting disorders need to be disclosed in full beforehand.

How long do fillers last?

This completely depends on the type of filler used and where it is injected, as well as patient dependent factors which determine how quickly the filler is broken down and metabolized by the body. As an example, cheek and lip filler usually lasts 6-9 months.

PRP sounds scary. Is it painful?

Not at all. The procedure involves drawing the patient’s blood. Slight discomfort is usually felt when this is done. As far as the actual process of injecting PRP into the skin – the face is numbed beforehand with a clinical strength topical anesthetic resulting in the treatment being pain-free.

How long does it take to recover from microneedling?

The healing process usually takes 3-4 days after micro-needling for the skin to settle and ay redness, peeling or flaking to subside completely. The skin then undergoes the microscopic process of healing and collagen induction.

Am I going to peel a lot after a Chemical Peel?

This depends on the type and concentration of the peel being done. Chemical peels are classified according to the depth of the skin being targeted as well as the problem/concern being addressed. Superficial peels (or lunchtime peels as they are commonly referred to) produce no visible peeling and do not have any associated downtime.

These peels usually only result in a few days of tightness, dryness, and flaking. Deeper peels require more stringent aftercare and result in more downtime due to a significant degree of swelling, redness, tenderness, and shedding of skin.

My skin is very sensitive. Can I still have a chemical peel?

Yes. With sensitive skin, it is essential to prepare the skin adequately before any procedure, including chemical peels, to build up a tolerance and to gauge the response of the skin to active ingredients. This is done in close collaboration with the patient to ensure the process is manageable and comfortable.

What can I do to prevent ageing on my hands?

This is a very common concern. Ageing on the hands can ultimately result in an aged appearance even if the face is looked-after. There are numerous procedures and a combination approach can be used to maintain a youthful look of the hands. Procedures that can be done include platelet-rich plasma, Redermalisation, dermal fillers, and chemical peels.

What can I do to resolve my turkey neck?

Aging in the neck area results in visible bands from muscle tissue and increased laxity of the skin which obliterates the jawline and results in a droopy double chin. Botulinum toxin to relax overactive neck muscles can be used as well as thread lifting using the most appropriate threads to create a lifting and tightening effect of the neck.

I have scarring from acne and holes in my face, what can I do?

Acne scarring is common and difficult to treat due to collagen damage from inflammatory acne. Regular sessions of micro-needling in combination with platelet-rich plasma and Redermalisation help to smooth the appearance of scars. In some more resistant cases, dermal fillers can be used to lift scarring. After individual consultation and based on the skin being treated, micro-needling in combination with certain peeling agents can be used to even out the texture of the skin. Home care is essential to stimulate the skin to resurface and produce adequate amounts of collagen.

Does Glutathione lighten the skin?

No. This is a marketing gimmick. Glutathione is an antioxidant that is naturally produced by our livers in high quantities in response to stress. It has been found to limit Melanin (pigment) formation in unnaturally high doses.

However, there is no clear cut research on safety and long term efficacy. We also have Melanin present in other places in our body such as our eyes, brain, etc. How the side effects of Glutathione affect these organs is unknown.

What can I do for dark undereye circles?

It depends on the reason for the dark circles. There are different contributing causes. These can be determined after an examination. Treatment options include Redermalisation, dermal fillers, and micro-needling as well as good home care products.

Is it fine to not wear sunblock?

Not at all. Sunblock is imperative daily regardless of the weather and whether you’re indoors or outdoors. The harmful effects of UV damage need to be counteracted to prevent ageing effects on the skin as well as more dangerous conditions like skin cancers. Sunblock must be applied every day and reapplied at intervals to ensure adequate protection.

What is retinol and who would benefit from it?

Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. It works by gently exfoliating the skin to smooth skin texture which treats and prevents wrinkles and aging. It is also an excellent topical treatment for milder forms of acne and to prevent and treat breakout activity and oily skin.

What can get rid of my pigmentation really quickly?

Unfortunately in life, there are no quick fixes. Pigmentation occurs in everyone and safe methods of treatment require time, patience and patient compliance to treatment and instructions. Pigmentation also occurs at different depths of the skin with deeper pigmentation being more resistant to treatment.

I’ve been cleansing my face with soap. Is this fine?

No. Soap has a very high pH which draws water out of the skin and results in the skin becoming dehydrated and sensitive. This can result in more oil production as a compensatory mechanism. If you are using active ingredients in combination with soap as a cleanser, it can sensitize your skin further which could result in certain adverse effects such as hyperpigmentation and redness.

What are the side effects of fillers?

Immediate side effects can include redness, swelling, itching, and pain at the site of injection which subsides soon after. Other side effects also include bruising which can occur occasionally and can take a slightly longer time to subside. For this reason, alcohol and any blood-thinning medications need to be avoided for a period of time prior to treatment and any blood clotting disorders need to be disclosed in full beforehand.

What product is suitable after a procedure? (chemical peel, microneedling etc.)

After any minimally invasive procedure, the skin needs time to rebuild its barrier and heal. Active ingredients are discouraged until the skin has settled and any redness, peeling, flaking, or tightness has subsided. Sunblock is essential and products containing Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, Shea butter, Jojoba oil, or peptides are excellent to help rebuild the skin barrier.

What is important in a product for someone in their 30s, 40s and 50s?

The skin basically starts showing age from the late 20s with more severe signs of ageing being present in someone in their 50s. From an early age, prevention is better than cure in terms of the procedures being done. Good skincare is essential. This will prevent ageing and pigmentation later on. A good product collection/combination is tailored to the individual and the skin being treated. Of course, at any age, sunblock is non-negotiable.

How long does it take to recover from microneedling?

The healing process usually takes 3-4 days after microneedling for the skin to settle and any redness, peeling or flaking to subside completely. The skin then undergoes the microscopic process of healing and collagen induction.

When should one start using an eye cream?

The early 20s. This is when the thin skin around the eye area starts to show age from reduced collagen production.

Is using a toner important?

No. Toners are supposed to balance the pH of the skin. This isn’t essential if the cleanser you are using is gentle and pH balanced.

What is a serum?

A serum contains active ingredients in smaller particle size to penetrate deeper layers of the skin. The texture usually ranges from a liquid to a gel and should be applied before a moisturizer or sunblock in your regimen.
